View the Future has been continuing to work with partners to support the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department’s (OPRD) purchase of the 950 acres of what we now call Yachats Ridge. The property is presently owned by Manulife Management but with over eight decades of industrial timber harvesting. At the September Oregon Parks Commission meeting, the OPRD Land Unit Specialist, Ladd Whitcomb gave an analysis of Yachats Ridge stating that it met all five of OPRD’s values and said something rare, he encouraged the Commissioners to purchase it if due diligence finds no faults.
View the Future will be briefly presenting Yachats Ridge to the Oregon Parks Commission at their regular meeting on November 15th at 10 AM located at the Hallmark Resort in Newport. We invite you to attend the Commissioners’ meeting on the 15th to show your support of OPRD’s acquisition of Yachats Ridge. The presentation will begin with a video of the property created by one of our generous and talented volunteers, Carl Meilbergen. Joanne Kittel and John Theilacker will then quickly highlight some of the property’s natural and cultural assets and respond to Commissioners’ questions. While the Commission will not be deciding on the acquisition of this property on the 15th, we look forward to positive statements based on their immediate impressions.
Our board members are continuing to conduct public tours of Yachats Ridge when weather permits. If you are interested in taking a tour, please contact Joanne Kittel at joannekittel@viewthefuture.org. Immediately after the Oregon Parks Commission’s November 15th meeting, VtF will post the video of the property shown at their meeting on its website for anyone to view.
Donations of any amount are enthusiastically welcomed to help with the restoration of this property, once acquired from the current owner, and to serve as a match for private foundation and other grant applications. Donations may be made by going to the View the Future website at www.viewthefuture.org
