Land Acknowledgment
for the Central Oregon Coast
Land acknowledgement is a traditional custom dating back centuries for many Native communities and nations. It is a simple clear way of resisting the erasure of Indigenous histories and working towards honoring and inviting the true story of the first people of the land on which we work and live. In countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and among tribal nations in the U.S., it is commonplace, even policy, to open events and gatherings by acknowledging the traditional Indigenous inhabitants of that land.
Consistent with the mission of View the Future, we collaborate and cooperate with the two confederated tribes from the central Oregon Coast who are the descendants of this areas first people: The Confederated Tribe of Siletz Indians and the Confederated Tribe of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians. As each tribe’s historical truth is unique, the Land Acknowledgment for them is also unique. We invite you to read, ponder and understand the Land Acknowledgment of each tribe linked below
