Nan and Greg Scott
Nan and Greg Scott have owned property in Yachats since 1987 and moved here full-time in 2003. Both Greg and Nan were founding members of View the Future and have been active in many community activities. Nan and Greg have invested in this community in many ways including their time, skills, and the establishment of three endowments: the Gerdemann Botanical Reserve endowment, the Yachats Presbyterian Church Endowment, and the Yachats Youth & Family Activities Program Endowment.
Nan Scott
Nan Scott has been a significant contributor to the Yachats Community. She has served on the Trails Committee, The Planning Commission (including serving as chairperson), boards of Friends of the Commons, Quiet Water homeowners association, and View the Future, and is active in many roles with the Yachats Presbyterian church. She served as treasurer of the Presbyterian church, Friends of the Commons, Quiet Water Homeowners Association, and as the first treasurer of View the Future. Nan served as VtF treasurer from 2003 until 2015. One would think based on Nan’s many roles as treasurer that she had a background in finance, but no, that would be Greg. Nan’s path into bookkeeping is an interesting story.
Nan completed college with degrees in English and History and was a certified teacher. Because teaching jobs were scarce in Corvallis in the early ‘70s, Nan ended up taking a position as a secretary at the OSU College of Agriculture in the Department of Crop Science. There, she worked with an inspirational Department researcher and professor, Dr. Warren Kronstad, who motivated her to continue her studies. Nan took coursework in crop science, genetics, statistics, and computer science. She was moved from secretary to data processing in the department and was involved with plant breeding and the development of varieties of wheat that are used all around the world. With her background in teaching, she was also asked to teach classes and became recognized as especially effective in using a variety of teaching techniques to make complex content understandable. Nan retired from OSU with the credential of “Tenured-Senior Instructor.” A noteworthy accomplishment.
In addition, while in Corvallis, the Scott’s church needed an accountant and was ready to implement a new software system for accounting. Nan moved into that role, learned the system, and after moving to Yachats was able to utilize her knowledge applying that technology in each of the settings, she volunteered as treasurer. And that is the background that gave rise to Nan’s valuable roles as treasurer of multiple local groups.
In her free time, Nan stays busy with her creative passion for quilting and involvement with the Oregon Coastal Quilters Guild where she has served as President, Membership Chair, and Chair of the Quilt Show. Nan’s quilts are recognized as art pieces which she has donated as raffle items for some local fund-raising events. Nan can also often be seen walking with her companion-pup “Button”.
