View the Future (VTF) is honored to be a recipient of a 2019 Siletz Tribal Charitable Contribution Fund grant. The grant, presented at an awards banquet at the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City, August 2, 2019, will contribute to the construction of the new Amanda Trail Suspension Bridge over Amanda Creek.
The Amanda Trail is part of the Oregon Coast Trail. This new 145-foot bridge will provide safe passage for hikers; it will endure for many years being well above any future debris slides; and not interfere with the creek and riparian area’s recovery from the last major slide.
Most importantly, The Amanda Trail holds historical significance. It is so named to tell and remember the true and very sad story about the horrific atrocities that occurred over 160 years ago at the Alsea Sub-agency prison camp. The Amanda story and the prison camp years are told in two interpretive signs that are located where the bridge will be built near the Amanda Gathering Area and Amanda statue. The signs were created under the supervision of Robert Kentta, Cultural Resources Manager, and Tribal Council Member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and Jesse Beers, Cultural Resources Manager for the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians.
View the Future welcomes the partnership with the Siletz Tribe in this project.
