The Suspension Bridge project is on schedule – weather has not hindered the work at all. Abutments were created, tons ofconcrete poured and cured, towers now erected and anchored. The entire structure will be made of steel and a composite material. The cables will be erected next week. It is starting to look like a bridge.
The composite material is made by a company that the late former VtF board member, Charley Batch, helped to get off the ground through a program called the Rural Manufacturing Initiative he created through the Obama Administration. This program helped to create new environmentally safe industries in rural communities throughout the US. Unfortunately, the program was eliminated when Obama left office.
The person seen standing on the north bridge deck is Dennis Comfort, OPRD Coast Manger. He has been crucial in seeing this Suspension Bridge project through; helped build the second Amanda Bridge that was destroyed by a debris slide; and has been an avid supporter of the Amanda Trail since 2003.
Trails crew cleared out the Amanda Gathering Area of log seats for the excavator to place 12 huge cedar logs that Angell Job Corps will make into benches. Additional log benches will be added to accommodate 120 people for the bridge dedication.
