Jock and his wife DK moved to Yachats in 2016. They had discovered the magic little town some 30 years earlier on one of their many camping trips to the Oregon coast. When they first drove in Dk said to Jock this is the town we are going to live in someday, it just took a little while to manifest the dream.
Jock was raised on Russian Hill in San Francisco and his family also had a second home in the small town of Bolinas. His mother was a journalist that wrote a column about walking and exploring the Bay Area as well as being an ardent environmental activist. She led many fights to preserve natural and historic areas from development, helping to make the Presidio, the Marin Headlands, Fort Funston, and many other recreational areas available to the public. His father was a Doctor that went on to serve in many public health scenarios including going to India and Bangladesh to help eradicate Smallpox.
With this DNA in his genes, it is no surprise he chose to work with people and the environment at an early age. By age twenty he was working for the Youth Conservation Corps leading a crew of young folks building trails in the local National and State parks. He continued on in this work with both the Young Adult Conservation Corps and the Marin Conservation Corps. He later became Facility Manager and then Director of the Walker Creek Ranch Outdoor School and Conference Center. Before moving to Yachats, he worked for the County of Ventura Human Services Agency.
In his spare time, Jock enjoys hiking, bicycling, repairing bicycles and cars, working on home projects, and helping others.
Upon settling in Yachats, it became clear he needed somewhere to be of service and began volunteering at the Green Bike Coop in Waldport repairing bikes and ebikes. When offered a seat on the View the Future Board he leapt at the chance to work with such a diverse and passionate group of individuals focused on the local environment.
