View the Future congratulates Yachats Trail Committee Leader Wally Orchard for creating a new orchid, “Disa Amanda” which is registered with the Royal Horticultural Society at the Kew Gardens in London. His new orchid is named after Amanda DeCuys, the local native woman whose story of forced relocation resulted in a Yachats trail, creek, and gathering grotto named in her memory, as well as the annual Yachats Peace March every January 1.
Wally created this hybrid by making a cross between two other orchids in his collection, all of them belonging to the genus Disa. Disas have a reputation for being difficult to grow, and very few people do try to grow them. You can find out more about Disas on Wally’s website.
