View the Future would like to share an exciting new book written by Andrea Scharf, one of the original founders and past chairperson of View the Future.
Andrea’s book, Saving Big Creek tells the history of a battle to save 186-acres along Big Creek, halfway between Yachats and Florence, Oregon. It took almost forty years before the property was finally secured by The Nature Conservancy and turned over to Oregon State Parks to be preserved as a natural area forever.
The struggle is told through personal interviews, extensive research in land use records, court decisions, and background material on everything from the geology of the Central Oregon Coast to the life cycle of the Oregon Silverspot Butterfly to the history of human habitation. Andrea braids the natural and human environments into a compelling story. Although the developer who bought the Big Creek property dismissed the opposition as “a bunch of dope-smoking hippies,” the local community was smart, resourceful, cohesive and determined, and stuck with it until the goal was achieved.
Besides being a good story, Saving Big Creek is an inspiration to all of us who care about the fate of our planet and who work and contribute to keeping it healthy.
